How does transanal irrigation provide effective bowel management?

Transanal irrigation (TAI)

TAI is an effective bowel management treatment that may help you if your MS affects your bowel. TAI involves introducing water into the rectum or colon via a rectal catheter. This promotes the evacuation of faeces from the bowel.1

This method of bowel management can help you achieve confidence in and control over your bowel by helping to prevent faecal incontinence and constipation.1 The procedure can be administered on your own or with assistance.

Transanal irrigation can be an effective alternative to other types of bowel management like mini enemas, laxatives, suppositories, manual evacuation, and digital stimulation. It helps reduce constipation and faecal incontinence, and reduces the time spent on bowel management.

Different types of transanal irrigation

There are different types of transanal irrigation, high- and low-volume TAI. “Volume” simply refers to how much water the system uses to irrigate the bowel. Below is a summary of what these systems offer.

Low-volume TAI

  • uses up to 250ml of water2
  • usually cleans out the rectum only2
  • is designed for use at home and to carry with you and use when on the go

High-volume TAI

  • uses up to 250ml of water2
  • provides an irrigation that empties the rectum and parts of the colon2
  • can help you to stay continent for up to 2 days1
