If you are living with multiple sclerosis (MS), you may already know a bit about transanal irrigation (TAI). TAI is a technique that involves introducing water into the bowel through the anus to help empty it. There are both high- and low-volume TAI options – each suited to different needs and preferences. The Peristeen range caters to both.
At Coloplast, we listen closely to people with MS and their care partners, so we can offer bowel care solutions that fit your everyday life. The Peristeen range includes two main TAI products: Peristeen Plus and Peristeen Light. A Peristeen Anal Plug is also available.
Peristeen Plus is a high-volume TAI system that can help users preserve their independence. It is well-suited for people who have found insufficient relief from conservative bowel management and allows the majority of users to control when and where they empty their bowels.
Peristeen Plus is portable, compact, and lightweight for optimal mobility, allowing users to complete their TAI procedure at home or on the go.2
It is designed to be easy to use and to fit smoothly into your everyday life, offering a convenient option for managing bowel symptoms both at home and/or on the go.
In collaboration with healthcare professionals, you can explore which approach best matches your needs and lifestyle, giving you more flexibility and control over your bowel in your everyday life.
Both Peristeen Plus and Peristeen Light work by introducing water into the bowel through a rectal catheter. This process helps trigger natural emptying of the bowel.
Peristeen Plus is easy to use.3 It works by instilling water into your bowel whilst you sit over a toilet. With an easy-to-use control unit,4 the water is carefully pumped from a waterbag and instilled with a rectal catheter, specifically designed to minimise discomfort during your irrigation.
Here, you use a larger volume of water, which can help you to stay continent for up to 2 days.5
Once the catheter is removed, you can then empty your bowel of the water and any stool whilst sitting over the toilet. As a high-volume TAI device, it can potentially empty the rectum, sigmoid colon, and descending colon.6
Peristeen Light accommodates individual bowel needs with different options. It is available in two sizes: 175 ml and a larger 250 ml which means you can have a bigger flush, without compromising the convenient size.
The easy to squeeze water container allows you to instil the water into your bowel whilst sitting over a toilet. Peristeen Light uses less water than Peristeen Plus and is designed to be an intuitive and easy to use solution that fits easily into everyday life or travels.
Peristeen Light 250 ml also comes with the possibility of using an extension tube for extra flexibility, meaning that you can perform your irrigation in a position that is right for you.
The goal of TAI is always to help you empty your bowel regularly and comfortably, reducing the risk of unexpected accidents and the discomfort of constipation. Many people find that using TAI products like those found in the Peristeen range helps them: Peristeen Plus gives users confidence and control through effective and predictable prevention of faecal incontinence and constipation, and 75% of users agree or strongly agree that Peristeen Light is a solution you can rely on to manage your bowels.7
Sometimes, people who use Peristeen Plus may also choose to supplement their high-volume irrigations with Peristeen Light. Peristeen Light is designed to be convenient both at home and on the go, meaning some people choose to carry this product with them even when they have already used their high-volume device.
Living with MS can affect how your bowels work, often leading to symptoms like constipation or faecal incontinence.8 The Peristeen range is designed to help you manage these challenges effectively.1,5
“I didn’t constantly have to think about having a toilet nearby. So yeah, I instantly felt more secure. It just worked right away, and that was a major advantage.”
Fikria | Peristeen Light User
“When I first started using Peristeen, it was so much easier than I thought it would be. To begin with, I wasn’t that great with the routine of doing it every other day. But my family encouraged me, reminding me about the difference it makes. The quality of life and the confidence it’s given me far outweigh the actual process itself. With my fatigue levels and my overall well-being, it just makes me feel so much better.”
Laura | Peristeen Plus User
Reliable solutions – 75% percent of users agree or strongly agree that Peristeen Light is a solution you can rely on to manage your bowels.7
Recommended by others – 96% of Peristeen Plus users said they would recommend Peristeen Plus to other users with a bowel dysfunction,9 and 67% percent of Peristeen Light users agree or strongly agree that they would recommend Peristeen Light to others.10
In addition to TAI products, Coloplast offers an anal plug solution. Peristeen Anal Plug is a small, discreet device you can use to help create a barrier the rectum and helps regain control over faecal incontinence. It may be helpful if you want extra reassurance during daily activities, social events, or travel. Once inserted, Peristeen Anal Plug helps to give you a sense of security and peace of mind. Peristeen Anal Plug can stay in the rectum for up to 12 hours at a time.
Peristeen Anal Plug can be used independently, or you may choose to use the anal plug as additional support between irrigations. For example, if you use Peristeen Plus or Peristeen Light for regular bowel management but want extra confidence at certain times—perhaps when you know a restroom won’t be easily available—the anal plug can offer another layer of protection.
This flexible approach lets you combine different solutions to match your specific needs, so you can live more freely and confidently.
If you are unsure whether your MS is affecting your bowel or whether one of these products may right for you, you can take our free bowel check to start to reflect on your bowel health. You may then use these results as a springboard for a deeper conversation about your bowel health with your MS nurse or doctor.
With a range of different products available, it’s natural to feel unsure of your next move. Reach out to Coloplast Care to discuss your options. As these products are medical devices, it is essential that your MS nurse or doctor prescribes one of these treatment options. Often this can start with a bowel examination by a specialist.
